Today's lecture was interesting, very interesting indeed. Why? Because we had no lecture at all. Our teacher asked if we wanted to go out and see the stuff we're studying in practice and of course we did. So we joined a demonstration organised by De Montfort University and Leicester University, against possible cuts in education and huge rise in tuition fees here in the UK. There were about 100-150 people gathered around the Clock Tower in the city centre, a bunch of police and lots of passers by. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed even though the catchphrases were pretty bold. This demonstration was a part of several others organised at the same time in different cities in the country.
It's a shame that only that much people showed up, although the student's union advertised the event only for a tiny number of students. There is about 20 000 students in De Montfort University alone and a bigger group could've made the point clearer and stronger. This topic is really important, not only for the people in the UK but also for everybody else. I argue that if for example increased tuition fees are brought to life here, there is a high possibility that it's going to happen in other countries too.
The government is going to vote tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.
