Nyt meni niin kuin Strömsössä

Jaa mikä? No Research & Ethics - kurssin päätöstyön elikkä oma research proposalin palautus. Tänään aamulla tallustelin kirjastoon tulostamaan työtäni. Tulostimet pikkuisen nikottelivat ja sitä kirosin suloisilla vaaleanpunaisilla sanakäänteilläni. Noh, sain kuitenkin homman hoidettua ja kävelin opintotoimistoon palauttamaan ko. työtä. Kävelymatka kestää lampsimisen nopeudesta riippuen noin 5 minuuttia. Kun pääsin perille, oli toimistossa lappu, että kaikki DMU:n tulostimet ovat kaatuneet.

VAU, mikä ajoitus. Taisi olla mun paperini viimeisiä mitä koko laitoksessa hetkeen tulostettiin. Ja ne jotka eivät ymmärrä, niin DMU:ssa työt palautetaan tiettynä päivänä klo 9.45-12.00 välisenä aikana eikä käsitettä armo ole tietääkseni lanseerattu.

Koska olen pakertanut tuon ko. työn kimpussa hävyttömän monta tuntia vuorokaudessa hävyttömän pitkän ajanjakson ajan, käppäilin opintotoimistolta suoraan kaupunkiin ja ostin itselleni vähän kesäkivaa. Billabongin sortsit, lähtöhinta £60.00, nyt £9,99. Lisäksi kolme erilaista toppia £2,99; £3,99 ja £15,99 (tämän lähtöhinta kolmekymppiä). Nam nam, tulee ikävä tätä hintatasoa.

Paluu arkeen

Nyt on kaverit ja toinen puolisko lähetetty takaisin Suomen kamaralle. Tulin huomanneeksi, että nuo kaksi edellä olevaa kuvaa ovat ainoita, joissa ei jonkun meidän pärstää näy. Joten siinä tämänkertainen kuvaraportti kaikessa monimuotoisuudessaan ;)

Tänään kävin tapaamassa tulevia täältä lähteviä vaihtareita. Tai niin ainakin luulin. Ennen joulua oli kartoitettu innokkaita Suomeen ja Kreikkaan lähtijöitä ja ilmoittautuneita tuli 20, puolet niistä Suomeen. Tänään oli enää yksi Kreikkaan lähtijä ja yksi erittäin epävarma Suomeen lähtijä. Kumma juttu. Ainakin, jos miettii kuinka moni meidän vuosikurssilaisista Laureassa lähti maailmalle - kotiin taisi jäädä vain muutama hassu.

Asumisesta

Sataa sataa ropisee ja siksi on hyvä olla katto pään päällä. Niinpä seuraavaksi hieman infoa eri asumismahdollisuuksista, jos joku halajaa tänne seuraamaan kunniallisia jalanjälkiäni.

1. Yksityiseltä vuokratut kämpät

Näissä voi säästää paljon rahaa. Toisaalta, näissä ei sitten tiedä yhtään mitä saa. Itse en lähtisi yksityiseltä vuokrattuun kämppään, ellei paikan päällä olisi joku joka tsekkaisi kämpän kunnon ja vuorkaisännän mielenterveyden. Vaarana on halpa, mutta paskainen ja homeinen loukku, josta keikataan läppärit sun muut arvoesineet kerran kuussa.

2. Yliopiston "hallit"

Student hallien omistajina on usein yksityiset yritykset, jotka tekevät yhteistyötä yliopiston kanssa. Hinnat vaihtelevat paljon ja toisaalta on vähän yks risti kaks, että mistä hallista kämpän saa. Yleisimmin hakija saa laittaa toivomusjärjestykseen kolme hallia, joista sitten katsotaan mihin mahtuu. Kaikissa halleissa en ole käynyt, mutta tässä nyt jotakin:

Liberty Park on oma asumukseni. Kohtuullisen kallis, melko pienet huoneet, pieni junanvessaa muistuttava kylppäri ja kokonaisuudessaan meluisa (ympyränmuotoisella sisäpihalla meinaan kaikuuuuu). Näistä huolimatta olen tyytyväinen asumukseeni, sillä olo täällä on turvallinen, en ole vielä kuullut kenenkään joutuneen täällä varkauksien kohteeksi ja paikat on siistejä ja toimivia. Esimerkiksi keittiön kunnot tarkastetaan kerran viikossa, joten edes jonkinlainen siisteys on säilyttävä. Tämä on hyvä, koska ette oikeasti usko kuinka sikoja ihmiset voivat olla...

Victoria Hall oli se, johon ensisijaisesti toivoin pääseväni ja joka edelleen on oma suosikkini. Plussana aavistuksen halvempi hinta, isot huoneet, kunnon kylppäri ja keittiö-olohuone-yhdistelmä, joissa joskus on jopa sohvat ja telkkari. Täälläkään ei käsittääkseni ole kämppiin murtauduttu. Miinuksena on tiukka sähköbudjetti, joka kuulemma paukkuu kaikilla joka vuosi. Eli lisämaksuja hyvin suurella todennäköisyydellä.

Newark on paikka, jota kehoitan välttämään. Pelkästään tänä lukuvuonna monet asukkaat ovat saaneet luovuttaa arvoesineensä mister murtomiehen kynsiin, turvasysteemit kusee ylipäätään ja paikka on kokonaisuudessaan melkolailla paskainen. Kämppien kuntoa ei tarkasteta tai jos tarkastetaan niin seurauksia ei tule. Röökiä pystyy polttamaan ongelmitta sisällä, vaikka se kiellettyä onkin. Vessat toimivat noin kerran viikossa, ehkä.

Newarf on todella halpa ja siisti. Siivojat siivoaa esimerkiksi keittiön, käytävät ja vessat. Niin, siinä se miinus sitten olikin - Newarfissa jaetaan vessa ja kylppäri kaikkien kämppäkavereiden kanssa. Toinen miinus on se muikea tosiasia, että lämmin vesi ei aina ole itsestäänselvyys vaan saatat hyvinkin pulikoida jääkylmässä vedessä muutaman päivän kerrallaan.

Muihin halleihin kuten Benjamin Russeliin tai upouuteen Codeen en ole tutustunut.

3. Jos ylimääräisiä oravannahkoja on aivan pirullisen paljon, niin ainahan voi asua hotellissa ja ajella limusiinilla. Vaihtoehto se on sekin.

Modules - Finally! ... and some disoriented stuff

Ay up everybody! Today we had a meeting with Head of the division of Social Work and Health Studies and there we finalized our modules that we're going to study here at DMU. The main problem was that all the modules (= courses) here cover all different age groups so we couldn't study for example only early education and family welfare as we'd do in our specializing studies back in Finland. However, we had some courses left in our curriculum that are not specializing ones so in the end there wasn't problem at all.

We're gonna study 3 different modules and two of them we know for certain. For the third one we have to get an additional acceptance from the module leader because it belongs to Health Care Studies whereas the other are from Social Work field. Our head of division didn't see any reason why it wouldn't be possible but she's going to let us know in a few days - let's keep our fingers crossed just in case!

So here are the two confirmed modules:

- Research and Ethics in Social Work field (theoretical aspect & an own research project that can actually be attached to our thesis in Finland if we want) 15 credits, starting on January

- Interprofessional Education (inter-relationships between Social work and other social services, practice placements on the field, portfolio of evidence) 15 credits, starting on January

On those modules we can focus our assessments to children and family welfare. They both also give us an opportunity to make comparison between Great Britain and Finland. I actually got some ideas for my thesis based on theses modules but at this point I'm going to keep these thoughts away from this blog... :) But the greatest thing is that on these modules we'll be working with all kinds of professions and organizations here and the studies we'll be very practical. And I have to say that these credits that we do here insists so much more work than they'd do in Finland... But I don't mind, I'm here to learn!

We would've been very interested in to do our Management studies here but because of the schedules it didn't work out. That module would've been running at the time as those two other modules ahead.

As I said, the third module (15 credits) is to be confirmed very soon. It's based on international questions within Social and Health Care field but I'll tell more about it when the final confirmation comes. The module is going to begin next week.

But a long story short, we're going to do 45 credits here. Of course it's worthwhile mentioning that we've already done 15 credits before we got here because we did our second practical period during summertime.

AND there's also lot's of extremely interesting volunteering projects going on and I'm definitely going to take part of one of them. But more about it later on...

Yesterday there was a Welcoming Event for the first year students. All the different divisions introduced themselves and there was lots of different performances, for example capoeira, music, etc.

More delicious stuff from the Leicester Market and all this £5,5. I also found out that there's a market for fresh fish and meat too from Tuesday to Friday. I have to check it out.

This is just a some kind of a proof that I didn't lie - there actually are swans on our back river.

Leicester vol 2

Tässä hieman näkymää aivan kaupungin keskustasta. Kadut ovat kapeita ja risteyksiä on joka puolella, joten olo on kuin astetta vilkkaammassa pikkukaupungissa. Sellainen Leicester taitaa ollakin, ainakin paikallisen mittapuun mukaan.

Tämännäköistä on suurinpiirtein kaikkialla keskustan ulkopuolella. Jälleen kadut ovat kapeita ja ne ovat reunustettu taloilla, jotka ovat joko täysin kiinni toisissan tai korkeintaan parin metrin välimatkan päässä. On siis täysin ymmärrettävää, että tulipaloriskiin kiinnitetään täällä paljon huomiota - joku sattuu nukahtamaan hella päällä ja tuloksena vähintään puoli kaupunkia roihuaa.

Täällä melkein kaikki talot on täysin samanvärisiä eli tuollaisia punaruskeita tiilitaloja. Maisema saattaa jatkua samannäköisenä silminkantamattomiin... Ainoastaan joissain taloissa ovi on maalattu siniseksi tai punaiseksi erottuakseen joukosta.

Vihreätäkin täällä toki on. Metsää ei ole ja joka puolella on tasaista pieniä kumpuja lukuunottamatta, mutta puistoja on siellä täällä. Ja tietenkin tuo joki, jota olenkin jo paljon mainostanut.

Tässä on koulumme kirjasto. En malta odottaa, että saan kirjastokortin ensi viikolla! Kirjasto on kuulemma huikean suuri ja auki 24/7.

Get involved! Sitä täällä toitotetaan joka puolella. "You get just as much from the university that you've put in." Eli suomeksi täällä järjestetään opiskelijoille hurja määrä kaikenlaista aktiviteettia niin nyt tervetuliaisviikolla, ensi viikon Fresher's Weekellä kuin koko lukukautena ylipäätään. Vapaaehtoistyötäkin on tarjolla joka makuun ja ainakin me kiinnostuimme kovasti Global Village- projektista, jossa vaihtarit käyvät paikallisilla peruskouluilla kertomassa lapsille omasta kulttuuristaan. Urheilua on myös joka lähtöön ja niitä pääsemme kokeilemaan ensi viikolla kun kaikki opiskelijajärjestö DSU:n urheiluklubit esittäytyvät.

Eilen vaihtarit pääsivät keilaamaan. Tutustuimme paljon uusiin ihmisiin ja kivaa oli! Tänään on luvassa retki Bradgate Parkiin ja illalla on ensimmäiset kunnolliset bailut vaihtareille. Ja kyllä, meidän koululla on kaikkien muiden hienouksien lisäksi oma baari!

Ai niin, tulihan sitä eilen käytä täälläkin eli Statford Upon Avonissa. Tässä talossa on syntynyt itse herra Shakespeare.

Greetings from Leicester

This building here is De Montfort University's Campus Centre. All the different departments and student accommodation halls are situated around it. Everything is within walking distance, for example you can walk to the city centre in about 10-15 minutes.

We had a Welcome and Registration Event at the Campus Centre on Monday evening. There was a jazz band playing, food, wine, welcoming speeches and all the international students were gathered around. The event was really nice and well organized but there was one thing that bothered us. Amongst international students, me and Lilli are part of a really small minority. Almost all the others are from somewhere Asia and they have their own things. We tried to be nice and welcoming to everybody but these people just make their own groups where they have their own language and stuff. This made us kind of pleased that we're not from those countries because now when there's only two of us, we have to use English and get to know new people perhaps more than they do.

Today we had a couple of information sessions and a cinema night. And we actually managed to get to know a bunch of new people!

This is a gate to Leicester Market, a place where I'll spend much of my time here. They sell fresh fruits and vegetables here and all the prices are shockingly cheap. Salesmen shout to attract customers, shout to each other and the atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. If you buy something (and trust me you will) they greet you with "hello love, what can I do for you" or something that'd never be said in Finland.

I read that there's a Farmer's Market here on the last Wednesday of every month. Then all the food must be made within 30 miles of Leicester, it cannot be genetically modified and it must be sold by someone who helped make it. I'll definitely be there!

I have to say that I love the way people behave towards each other here. Everybody smile to each other, greet one another and ask how they're doing. Of course they don't really want to hear anything specific but it's a nice habit. And all this is done to a complete strangers too!

We don't have any room mates yet. But all the British student's are coming to DMU next week so hopefully we get some company then.

Checklist

As I promised, this blog will include some English too so here we go. It has been an eternity since I've written anything in English so I apologize all the mistakes I make.

I hope that this blog will be useful for someone who's planning an international exchange period so here is a checklist for things I had to do before leaving Finland. Of course procedures can be a bit different with every school but at least this was the case with Laurea University of Applied Sciences and De Montfort University (DMU).

- International exchange or training application for home school (Kansainväliset opiskelija- ja harjoittelijavaihdot Laureasta)

- Funding application (Apuraha-anomus vaihdon ajalle - ulkomaiset opinnot)

- ECTS Learning Agreement

- My Exchange Experience form for Laurea, section Before the Exchange

- The Social Insurance Institution of Finland, KELA (toimeentulotuen muutosilmoitus)

- Exchange Program Application Form for DMU

- Accommodation Preference Form for DMU

- Accident Insurance application for Laurea

- Personal insurances, for example traveller's insurance

- Signing up for International Welcome Week at DMU

- Signing up for Coach Pick Up Service at DMU

- E-induction for accommodation at DMU

Other things to remember:

- Make sure you have someone at your home school AND at the host school to take care of your exchange period arrangements. Otherwise you'll be bounced from person to person without anything real to be done. Of course you are the one who is responsible that everything is taking care of but it helps if you have someone named at the both ends who represents the schools. If there appears some problems with the arrangements you can then turn to these persons.

- Be active. Ask questions and make sure you get the answers too. Always be polite but be precise and even strict too.

- Make sure you get the official approval for your exchange period as soon as possible. Without it you can't apply for accommodation.

I may have forgotten half of the important things but I'll add more later.
